The Town of Edinburgh relies on groundwater to supply drinking water to approximately 5,000 customers in and around the Edinburgh area utilizing water from one well field. The town began using groundwater from the current well field in 1929 with a single groundwater well (Well 1). Groundwater use expanded with an additional well in 1938, 1956 and two wells in 1967. Some old wells were abandoned and replaced with similar wells in the history of the utility. The four production wells currently are identified as Well 1, Well 2, Well 3 and Well 4 and vary in depth from 81 to 109 feet.

Water Department

These wells are used in various combinations to supply water to the treatment plant that is capable of treating up to 1.4 million gallons per day. At the present time there are no plans to expand either the well field or capacity of the treatment plant. The treatment plant performs iron filtration and chlorination before distribution to the system. The water plant supplied in excess of 253 million gallons of water in 1997 or about 700,000 gallons per day.

WATER QUALITY
Water quality is our top priority. All the water we deliver to the customer meets or exceeds strict standards for public drinking water established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. We collect thousands of water samples each year and send them to highly trained state-certified laboratories to be analyzed. We work hard every day to make sure you have a refreshing and steady supply of water every time you turn on the tap.

TURNING YOUR WATER ON
When you apply for water service you must go to the utility office located at 107 S. Holland Street and complete a service application and pay a meter deposit of $20.00. Water service request done by 2:00 PM will have same day service and requests after 2:00 PM will be done the next business day. Once service has been requested, we will schedule a service call to read the meter and start your billing with an actual meter reading. It may be necessary for a utility representative to enter your home or business to read the meter. An adult should be present when our utility representative comes to turn on your water. Before your water is turned on, please check to ensure all water outlets, both inside and out, are turned off to prevent water damage, which could occur from open faucets. If you are applying for service at a home or business that is not currently connected to our system, please contact our office staff at 812-526-3514.

TURNING YOUR WATER OFF
Please notify the utility office located at 107 S. Holland Street in person when you want your water service disconnected. Advance notice allows us time to take a final meter reading and ensure that you are only charged for the water you use.

UNEXPECTED WATER PROBLEMS
If you ever experience a water leak, frozen water line or other unexpected disruption of service, you will save time and effort if you are familiar with the water service line. Then you will be better equipped to know where a leak might be and who is responsible for that portion of the service line. (See FAQ page for more information)
