Robert Dale "Bob" Bensheimer B-D-273-8

Robert Dale "Bob" Bensheimer, 91, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at Bell Trace Health and Living Center in Bloomington. He was a longtime resident of Franklin. Bob was born Nov. 15, 1921, to Amos and Hazel (Roberts) Bensheimer. He was the fourth of eight children, five of whom survive. He grew up near Trafalgar and graduated from Union Township High School in 1940. He married Leah Margaret Dicken, also from Franklin, on Dec. 3, 1942, in Gulfport, Miss. She preceded him in death in January 2007. Survivors include three brothers and two sisters; special friend Evelyn Amick of Shelbyville; two daughters, Leah Dayle Bensheimer of Edinburgh and Brenda (Jim) DeCoursey of Spencer; three grandsons, John Nicholas (Angie) Leach of Fort Wayne, R. Scott (Sherri) DeCoursey of Martinsville and C. Matthew (Ginger) DeCoursey of Zionsville; and seven great-grandchildren, Kyle, Gretta, Joel, Ben, Charlotte and Gwen DeCoursey and Cohen Joshua Leach. Bob served honorably during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Tech. Sgt. Bensheimer flew bombing missions from England, North Africa and Italy over Germany and Italy. He was a gunner and chief engineer on B17s with the 2nd Bombardment Group and the 429th Split Arrow Squadron. He made lifelong friends from this experience and in the 1980s and '90s attended reunions of the Air Force Association and the 2nd Bombardment Group. Bob farmed and owned an agricultural lime trucking business, retiring in 1987 to enjoy traveling out west. He and Marge were members of the Good Sam Travelers. They also were longtime members of Edinburgh Christian Church, where he served as a trustee. They were also 50-year members of the Nineveh Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star No. 466. He was a 50-plus-year member of Nineveh Masonic Lodge 317 and Franklin American Legion Post 205 of Franklin. The Rev. Byron Trotter will conduct a service at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St. (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh.
