John Earl Coffey, 83, of Scipio, died 1:33 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. John retired from Cosco after 38 years of service. He was a member of Rocky Ford Free Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, serving during World War II where he received the Purple Heart. He loved his church and working in his church. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Riggs officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh. A military graveside service will be conducted by VFW Post 2021 from North Vernon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rocky Ford Free Methodist Church or Hospice of South Central Indiana. John was born June 20, 1926, in Johnson County, the son of Jonnie L and Fannie Burton Coffey. He married Gladys Bryant March 9, 1946. She survives. Survivors include a son, Frank Douglas (Esther) Coffey of Pensacola, Fla.; daughters, Frances Dianna Sanford and Jannet Gaile (Don) Ray, both of North Vernon; grandchildren, Brian Coffey, Stacy Batts, Jerry Sanford, Cindy Emminger, Frank Douglas Coffey Jr., Beth Ann Hamilton, Rebekah Ray, Keri Thompson; and four stepgrandchildren 30 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Avnelle Coffey of Lawrence; sisters, Lillie Coffman of West Virginia, Margaret (Bob) Graham of California and Carolyn Branaman of North Vernon. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gus Coffey and a sister, Evelyn Burton.
