Charles Edward "Charlie" Whetstine, 78, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. He was a lifelong resident of Franklin. He was born Dec. 24, 1930, in Franklin to Lester Thurl and Rosa Ann (Ratliff) Whetstine. He married Elizabeth "Libby" (Burton) Whetstine on July 13, 1980. She lovingly survives in Franklin. Other survivors include four children, Nicholas (Jennifer) Whetstine of Morgantown, Doug (Barbara) Whetstine and Scarlett Whiteis, both of Franklin, and Earnest "Ernie" Bradley of Whiteland; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob (Phyllis) Whetstine and Jimmy (Sue) Whetstine, both of Trafalgar; and a sister, Patty (Hobert) Frost of Franklin. He was preceded in passing by his parents and two grandchildren. He attended Franklin schools. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War from 1950 to 1955. Charlie was employed by National Starch and Chemical for 33 years as an electrician, retiring in 1996. He was baptized at First Mount Pleasant Church in Franklin. Charlie enjoyed fishing and mushroom hunting. He loved people, and his most treasured times were spent with his wife, children and grandchildren. Donnie Whetstine will conduct a service at 1 p.m. Thursday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St., (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home. Franklin American Legion Post 205 will conduct military graveside rites at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh.
