Sondra Twanette Mathis, 82, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Columbus Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Sondra was born on April 24, 1943, in Salem, Indiana, to Florence Kathryn Watts and Jerome Charles Watts. During her early childhood, the family lived in Nineveh and Boggstown before settling in Edinburgh, where she attended Edinburgh High School. She is survived by her devoted husband, Ernest Mathis, and her children, Pam Bannister, Tammy Tungett, and Anthony Tungett. She is also lovingly remembered by her stepchildren; Wesley Mathis (JoAnn), Lee Mathis, Ernest Mathis Jr. (Tracy), Shannon Allen (Mike), and Wayne Speers. Sondra was a proud grandmother to 12 grandchildren, great-grandmother to 8 great-grandchildren, and aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mavis Talu Doyle and Amaryllis Daugherty; her brother, Mark Chan; and her beloved dog, Benji. Her sister, ElyJahta Dawn Jahn (Gary) of Indianapolis, survives her. Sondra was a CNA and worked in the dietary department at Columbus Regional Hospital and St. Francis hospital, where she retired after many years of employment. Sondra had a true passion for gardening and took great pride in maintaining a vibrant, welcoming yard filled with flowers, plants, and the gentle melodies of wind chimes. She also had a love for bargain shopping and always found joy in discovering hidden treasures. One of her favorite indulgences was peanut butter fudge, which brought her comfort and happy memories. She will be remembered for her warmth, love of family, and the peaceful beauty she cultivated in her life and home. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m., Friday, June 27, 2025, at Myers-Reed Chapel with Rev. Clement T. Davis and Pastor Robert Hurt officiating. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery, Edinburgh. Visitation will also be Friday at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
