Sioux Falls VA Hospital Volunteer for 13,733 hours over 12 years helping in supply distribution. He was 30% disabled himself, but still cheerfully gave back to the service he loved. He had the ability to bring smiles to both the patients and staff as he made his rounds. There were stacks of certificates, plaques and a cup awarded to him for his volunteer service. He learned to drive and work on semi trucks in the service. The majority of his professional career was driving and mechanical work. He lived and worked out of Sioux Falls for the last 40+ years. He would come and visit his sons and family when routes went in that direction.
He is survived by:
Sons: Fred Lloyd Haptonstall, Gary Kent Haptonstall
Wife: Loretta Jean Haptonstall
Grandchildren: Fred Thomas Haptonstall, Michelle Kristen (Haptonstall) Grady, Steven Matthew Haptonstall, Jordan Abigail Haptonstall
Great-grandchildren: Noah Grady, Camden Grady, Blake Haptonstall, Juztice Haptonstall
He was a life member of VFW Post #628 and donated to many different Veterans organizations. He also had a love for the outdoors, including donating to Ducks Unlimited. His sons both travelled in his final months to visit him at the hospital. He had a clear mind in March and we were able to talk about anything that needed to be said. You could tell by walking through his apartment how much his family meant to him. There were pictures from many years that had been sent in cards and taken on trips of his family growing up. He had kept the cards that he received from his friends at the hospital and around the community. He had time to pray to make everything right. Anyone that knew him knows he is in a better place. He suffered from pain all over his body and recently losing a large amount of weight from the cancer that was attacking him. He is now free of pain and enjoying the greatest reward of all.
