James Giles, 79, of County Road 150W, died at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, January 4, 2015, at Columbus Regional Hospital. James was born July 7, 1935, in Burney, Indiana, the son of Nolen and Nerva A. Burton Giles. He married Bonnie L. Butler February 14, 2008. James was previously employed at Public Service Indiana and then opened and operated Jim’s 66 Filling Station in Edinburgh. He then owned and operated the “Nip & Sip” Tavern in Edinburgh. Jim then went to work at National Ice in Columbus and eventually was employed by the Indiana Department of Transportation, retiring in 2011. James was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served as a cook. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting and mushroom hunting. James never met a stranger and loved to share stories and jokes. The funeral will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 8, 2015, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service Thursday. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh with military honors presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; daughter, Teresa (Tim) Simpson of Columbus; brothers, Jerry D. (Joyce) Giles of Edinburgh, Richard M. (Carolyn) Giles of Columbus, Steve D. (Ann) Giles of Columbus, Larry W. (Betty) Giles of Edinburgh, Carl (Geraldine) Giles of Edinburgh and Clarence (Gloria) Giles of Dyersburg, Tennessee; sister, Darleen (Dale) Scott of Edinburgh; grandchildren, William and Anthony Wright; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William, Willie and David Giles; and his sisters, Aline Giles, Brenda Giles and Diana K. VanSyoc.
