David C. Brown, 65, of Columbus, died at 5:10 p.m., Friday, August 14, 2015 at his residence. David was born January 11, 1950 in Bartholomew County, the son of Carl and Juanita Brown and Louise and Charles White. He married Velma E. Hedger on March 22, 1967. David was raised by his grandmother, (mom) Lillie Mae Price. David owned horses and was a member of the Double Y Saddle Club. He completed his GED in 1974 and completed a 2 ½ year reading course in the Evelyn Woods reading program. David studied carpentry, plumbing and electrical work at Ivy Tech College for 3 years. During his life David has built and help remodel several homes and barns. David was employed at Cummins Engine Company for 30 years in various departments including Forman and Maintenance. He was baptized and attended the Apostolic Tabernacle in Edinburgh. David joined the Jackson County Masonic Lodge #146, F. & A.M. in 1974, and was a Master Mason. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis and a member of the Murat Shrine. In his lifetime David owned and operated his own gun shop, D. B. Guns for 22 years. David was not only a hero to his family, but to many in the community. At the age of 15 David saved the life of a young girl by pulling her from the Blue River in Edinburgh. In March 1973, the mayor of Franklin honored David by naming Brown’s Road after him. This honor was given to David for finding the missing body of a 2 year old boy that wondered into the river and drowned after a 3 week search. In 1983 David and his son rescued a man from drowning when his boat capsized at Grouse Ridge. David being an avid outdoorsman was a benefit to many people. He enjoyed farming, reading, guns, hunting, fishing, his corvettes, trucks and motor cycles and his tractor. David had pets he loved very much, Rosie, a Quaker parrot, his dogs, Cokey, Toby and Casey. David loved his family, friends and God. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife; son, David C. (Delilah) Brown of Dupont, Indiana; a daughter, Angela (Clint) Smith of Columbus; sisters, Jane Sawyer, Donna White, Carlena (Mike) Stigdon, Connie Huckbye and Jackie (Randy) Dixon all of Columbus; grandchildren, John Robert (Angelimar) Chiodo, of Puerto Rico, Joshua Ryan (Jennifer) Chiodo of Columbus, David Carl (Angie) Brown of Greenwood, Keliah Nicole (Travis) Jones of Scipio, Ashley Nichole Brown and Taya Lynn Brown both of Dupont, Indiana; great grandchildren, Steel Ryan Chiodo of Columbus and Allana Sage Jones of Scipio. He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandmother that raised him and a son, Daniel Edward Brown.
