Darlene Murray

Darlene Murray, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend ended her courageous battle with lung cancer April 24, 2021. Darlene was born to Vertis and Cecil (Rooks) Burton November 18, 1962, one of 11 children. She grew up in Edinburgh where she attended school through 10th grade. She left school to marry David Rice in 1979 and begin their family. They were married 20 years and together had four children; Becky, Trisha, Joe, and Heather. Later in life she met and married Richard Murray, gaining 3 stepchildren; Chris, Tanna, and Rachel. She has 15 grandchildren, and one additional expected. Darlene returned to school for her diploma, then enrolled in Ivy Tech where she graduated with high distinction for a degree in Medical Assisting. She enjoyed working at Southeastern Indiana Gastroenterology. She never shied away from hard work, she did whatever was needed to solve problems and support her family. She was a phenomenal mother and grandmother. To Darlene absolutely nothing came before her family and to say she had a fighter’s spirit does not begin to describe how fiercely she loved and lived. She faced many hurdles throughout life and pushed through each one with strength, determination, and grace. Her favorite place to be was near the ocean. As a teen she hitchhiked from Indiana to Florida, as an adult she went back every chance she could. Darlene was strong in her faith as a Christian. She loved God and loved the Christmas celebration. Every year her home was turned into a Christmas wonderland. Darlene is preceded in death by her father Vertis Burton, mother Cecil Burton, and two brothers, Terry Burton and Roger Burton. She is survived by her husband Richard Murray; children Becky Rice, Trish (Kevin) Connolly, Joe Rice, and Heather Rice; stepchildren Chris (Marcia) Murray, Tanna (Eric) Eads, and Rachel Murray; Grandchildren Dylan, Lilly, Zach, Jacob, Lexi, Ava, Waylon, David, Sam, Emma, Macy, Maddy, Kaydence, Zayden, and Cyrus; Brothers Windal (Lin) Burton, Philip (Leona) Burton, Gary (Cheryl) Burton, Tim (Angie) Burton, and Troy (Nancy) Burton; Sisters Helen (Bob) Burton, Barb McCorkle, and Marilyn (Brian) Stevens; Genny Burton, Dawn Burton, and many, many nieces & nephews.
