Sophie L "Lou" Smith of Edinburgh, Indiana passed away September 1, 2023, in her daughter's home surrounded by her family. She was born November 23, 1947, in Jonesville, Indiana, and was adopted by Oliver and Anna Burton of Edinburgh Indiana. Sophie enjoyed attending church, writing poems, collecting dolls, playing the piano, wintering in Florida, and playing bingo with her friends. Most of all, Sophie loved spending time with her family. She is survived by sons Jerry "Dale" Smith Jr. of Edinburgh, Indiana, and James (Diane) Smith of Oakland, Maryland; her daughter Tabitha (John) Duty of Columbus, Indiana; 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Sophie married Jerry D. Smith on November 26, 1965. They were married 51 years before his passing in 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents Anna & Oliver Burton; her husband Jerry D. Smith; as well as her sisters Willadean Lee and Margaret Clara Cooper. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at Who So Ever Will Community Church (623 S Eisenhower Dr, Edinburgh, IN 46124) with Rev. Randy Denton officiating. Visitation from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh. Arrangements were entrusted to Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home
