J.W. Oakes M-E-60-6

J.W. Oakes, 77, of Edinburg, died at 8:30 a.m. on April 9, 2025, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. J.W. was born November 14, 194,7, in Russell Springs, Kentucky, the son of J.B. and Grace Oakes. J.W. was a man of simple pleasures and a heart full of love. For over 30 years, J.W. was a familiar face behind the bar at the local Edinburg taverns. A devoted NASCAR fan, weekends were sacred — filled with the roar of engines and cheering on his favorite drivers. He also enjoyed the thrill of casinos, never missing a chance to try his luck. When he wasn’t working or watching races, you could find him cruising in his beloved Chrysler 300C or making one of his many trips to Walmart, his favorite spot for both essentials and the occasional treat. Above all, J.W. adored his grandchildren and found joy in surprising them with thoughtful gifts “just because.” His generous spirit and big heart will be missed by all who knew him. The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2025, at Who So Ever Will Community Church, with Pastor Randy Denton officiating. Calling will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Johnson County Humane Society. Survivors include his former wife, Patricia Ridge; children, Tonia (Eddie) Schrier of Poland, Indiana, J.W. (Ashley) Oakes Jr. of Marion County, Indiana, Penny (Brian) True of Franklin and Shane Barker of Franklin; sister, Betty Seagraves of Somerset, KY; grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah, Tyler, Logan, Suzzanna, Kristen, Zachary, Hannah, Haley, Anastasia, Austin, and Jesse; and 20 great-grandchildren.
